Description

The second [Fall of Ground] occurred on August 30th, and resulted in the death of a barer. He and his mate were removing baring about 30 feet thick. They were working about 15 or 16 feet from the top. Both men had examined the place and considered it safe. He said there were two small stones he would move. He displaced the lower one, when some loose soft rubbish came away and covered him up. When got out he was found to have sustained a broken leg and thigh and internal injuries. He was treated by the ambulance men on the spot and removed to his home at Wearhead, but unfortunately died the same day.
