There were two accidents under this heading [Fall of Ground] during the year. Both of them occurred at the Newlandside Quarry, belonging to Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan & Co., Ltd. The first happened on April 7th and resulted in the death of a quarryman. He and his mate were working on a panel some 50 feet above the one next beneath. They were trying to lever up some stone. He had cut a hole with his pick and had then placed the tool down. His mate turned round to get the pinch bar, when hearing a noise he turned his head and saw the man fail over the edge of the ledge. A piece of rock had come off at an oblique slip, and striking him had knocked him over.
