Two stonemen, Richard Purdon and George Davison were drilling at the Forge Cross Cut in the Busty seam when a huge quantity of coal came away from the side above where they were working and buried them. A piece of coal weighing half a ton struck Purdon, breaking his neck. He asked Anthony Brown, the night shift deputy, to get him out as he was choking, but when Brown returned with assistance only seven minutes later, Purdon was dead. Davison was removed and taken to Durham Infirmary.
