Date:  4th October 1907
Colliery:  Dinnington
Cause:  Fall of roof
Lives Lost:  1

Description

Deceased was hewing in longwall workings in the 1st West, 3rd Dip district of the Yard seam. The place he occupied was 8 yards wide and was bounded by coal on the right side and by a hitch on the left side and this hitch had altered its direction and crossed the face. The place had also crossed a 2½ feet dip hitch and advanced 4 yards beyond it. He was kyrving the coal next the hitch in front of him when a stone, 8 feet long by 4 feet wide and 14 inches thick, fell away from the roof close to the coal and fastened him. The stone was relieved by a slip running between the two hitches and canted out two props in its fall. The putter was in the place at the time and a minute or two before the accident a small piece of stone had fallen from the roof between the face and the tub which stood a few feet back. Deceased and the putter threw this stone to one side and the putter was getting a prop for deceased when the large fall took place. The deputy had been in the place along with the overman 10 minutes before and had then set two props with heads and left loose timber available. The Local Inspectors in their report remarked it would be impossible to detect the slip and that the place was well timbered.
