On 11th January a quarryman was killed by a stone projected by a shot in Barton Quarry, belonging to Messrs. The Barton Limestone Co. Limited. He was sitting in the quarrymen's cabin during the dinner hour and counting his pay, which had just been handed to him, when a piece of stone fell through the roof of the cabin, and striking him on the head, caused such injuries that he died the same day in Darlington Hospital. The cabin was not intended as a place in which to take shelter from shots, and no danger was anticipated, as it was situated behind a spoil heap 35 feet high, and was 150 yards from the point where shots were being fired.
