Date:  24th February 1907
Colliery:  Littleburn
Cause:  Accident on Surface
Lives Lost:  1

Description

Of the two cases in connection with machinery the first, causing the death of a fitter, occurred on 24th February at Littleburn Colliery, belonging to Messrs. The North Brancepeth Coal Co. Limited, and was due to his own want of care. His intention was to get rid of some sediment which had choked the blow-off valve of a boiler. Although he knew the boiler was under steam, he took no steps to have it blown off. He could have effected his purpose by drilling a small hole in the pipe and passing a wire through it. Instead he broke a joint and the consequent rush of steam and water scalded him to death. He had upwards of twenty years of experience of such like work, but he was probably doing what he considered was the quickest way at the moment.
