| Date: | 12th April 1907 |
| Colliery: | Croxdale |
| Cause: | Accident caused by machinery |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
The second case occurred at Croxdale Colliery, belonging to Messrs. The Weardale Steel, Coal & Coke Co., Limited, and 12th April, and resulted in the death of a stoneman. A boring bar, for cleaning out some six inch cast iron pipes, had been rigged up and was made to revolve by being connected to a wheel driven by the hauling ropes. The stoneman, with four others, was employed in getting the pipes into position for cleaning. He stooped down to help lift a pipe, when his clothing was caught by the revolving bar and he was dragged round by it. His spine was injured and his leg cut, and he died eight days later. The device for cleaning the pipes was an ingenious one, and, with a little car, I do not think the accident need have happened.
