Description

Deceased and his marrow were hewing together in the back shift in a lift 6½ yards wide and loose at both sides in broken workings in the Blake or Main Coal seam. The bottom coal and band, measuring together about 3 feet, had been taken out for a depth of 3 feet right across the place by the foreshift men. The top coal, about 3½ feet thick, was supported by six stays. A shot fired in the left side after drawing the stays failed, owing to a post roll in the coal, to bring down the jud. Three of the stays were reset and another shot prepared near the centre of the place, and when it was nearly ready to fire deceased was near the left side removing gear when a quantity of coal fell and caught him, The deputy was in the place at the time and was in the act of setting a prop. The Local Inspectors reported that they examined the place where the accident occurred and found the place all right.
