| Date: | 1st August 1905 |
| Colliery: | Byers Green |
| Cause: | By waggons |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
On August 1st an accident occurred at Byers Green Colliery belonging to Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan & Co., Limited. Deceased and his marrow were intending to lower a laden truck from underneath a stone spout in order to make room for an empty one. There were two brakes on the laden truck, and it was necessary to use both in lowering it down. Deceased was at the fore end brake with his back turned in the direction of the travel of the truck. He shouted to his marrow to ease up the brake to allow the truck to move, then, almost at once shouted him to put it on again, and then screamed. Deceased had first been crushed against one upright baulk, and then against another as the truck moved forward. Many trucks have been lowered down past these uprights, but this accident proved that they were too close to the road.
