On January 21st an accident occurred at Dean and Chapter Colliery belonging to Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan & Co., Limited, and resulted in the death of a railway guard. A locomotive engine was drawing eight empty goods waggons into the colliery sidings, running at a rate of about 10 miles per hour, and approaching deceased. He attempted to get on the engine and succeeded in getting hold of the band rail, but missed the step with his foot. He was swung round and fell in front of the first waggon, which went over his left leg. He died subsequently in hospital.
