| Date: | 3rd February 1905 |
| Colliery: | East Howle |
| Cause: | By machinery |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
One occurred at East Howle Colliery, belonging to Messrs. The Carlton Iron Company, Limited, and resulted in the death of a spare engineman. Deceased was brother to the regular screen engineman and attended to his work when he was off work. He was off work on this occasion. Deceased, evidently anxious about the work, was oiling, or about to oil, a bearing of the jigger shafting, when he was caught by his clothing and whirled round and round. The usual practice was to oil the bearings twice a day whilst the machinery was standing, when there is no possibility of' an accident. The oiling of shafting when in motion is always attended with great risk and should be prohibited.
