Colliery:  Grinkle (Ironstone)
Cause:  Riding on tubs
Lives Lost:  1

Description

The fourth occurred at the Grinkle Ironstone Mine. The deceased and others had been taking in a new rope for an incline ; on coming out they all got into the tub and signalled to the engineman to pull away. When close to the shaft the tub got off the way at some points and was upset, and one man fell upon his head and was killed. They all knew that riding in the tubs was prohibited.

Fatalities

Smithson, George, Fitter, Riding out-bye in an empty tub. He and other men had been taking in a new rope for an incline; when they had finished they all got into the tub and signalled to the engineman in the usual way. On reaching the stables while going no more than walking pace, the tub got off the way at the points, overturned and threw them all out. Deceased fell on his head in the water level and died shortly after being got out. All the men knew it was contrary to the special rules to ride, and Smithson had himself been warned not to do so
