| Date: | 25th August 1905 |
| Colliery: | Eston (Ironstone) |
| Cause: | Premature explosion of a shot |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
The other accident occurred at the Eston Ironstone Mine in Cleveland, and caused the death of a miner. A hole had been drilled about 10 feet from the ground pointing upwards and was charged with compressed power and was to be fired with a squib. In order to reach it, instead of using a ladder, he stuck his candle on the end of a wooden stemmer, and in lighting it ignited the squib instead of the match. There was no evidence in this case that he had taken off any of the sulphur match, and it is quite possible that his candle would not be quite steady at the end of the rammer and that the flame touched the squib and match at the same time. When the shot went off it blew down a quantity of ironstone which fell on the man who was standing immediately underneath it.
