Deceased and another hewer worked in the second working of the bord and pillar system, or "robbery" working as it is termed in Cumberland, in the Main Band 5½ feet thick. They had nearly finished the extraction of a pillar of coal and were returning to the face after having been some little distance outbye for refreshment when a stone 16 feet long 3 feet wide and 1½ feet thick fell from the roof without any warning, catching deceased on the back. He was not fastened but died almost immediately. The stone was relieved by a natural joint at one side and by the vees or leader of a hitch at the other. It was not supported by timber, but 4 props were set close to it between the hitch and the coal. Two deputies had examined the place during the course of the shift.
