A gut of ore, 10 to 15 feet wide, had been mined upwards from the 60-fathom level, and terminated at a shaly sandstone bed, 18 inches thick, above which was a black parting. The working of the highest portions of the ore had been carried on from a platform consisting of heads let into the sides, covered with other timber and debris. Five props set on this platform supported the shaly sandstone bed near the face of work; behind them it had been taken down. The morning inspector, when examining before work commenced, found the shaly sandstone bed given a little; the miners were warned, and the overman sent for, who, after examining the place, prudently ordered middle propping under the heads as a preliminary measure, and while this was being done the roof swung out the props, fell and broke through the platform and caught deceased.
