Lives Lost:  1

Description

No. 226 occurred at Ryhope Colliery, belonging to Messrs. The Ryhope Coal Co., Ltd., on July 1st, causing the death of a Shifter.

Deceased was working shiftwork in a long wall cross gateway, and in lowering a sleeper he had, it is thought, undermined a prop, and this let a plank and some stone down on to him, causing fatal injuries.

At the time of the accident deceased was working alone, and no one heard the stone fall, and it was not until he was found dead under it that it was known that the accident had occurred.

In all cases, where possible, it appears to me highly desirable, for safety, that men should not be allowed to work alone in a place where they are not visited by officials or others — such as putters — fairly frequently, as in case of an accident, no one being near to render assistance, the man may die, whereas if help had been at hand the injuries might not prove fatal.

At this Colliery, the Manager, after this accident, gave orders that men were not to work alone.

Fatalities

Blackburn, George, aged 21, Shifter, he was lowering a sleeper on a road, and in doing so undermined a prop supporting the end of a pair of gears, and thus let down a large stone, which caught and fatally injured him [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 03 Jul 1902 pg 3]
