No. 244 on the list occurred at Eston Mines, belonging to Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan and Company, Limited, on the 19th of July, and caused the death of a miner. I specially mention this accident because it shows how simply some are caused. The place in which deceased was working was 15 ft. high, and to all appearances one of the safest in the pit, and one of the last that an accident would be expected to happen in. The deceased man had drilled a shot-hole, charged, stemmed, and fired it at the right hand side. This shot left some stone hanging and he took a long bar to get it down, and when the stone fell — which it did very suddenly — he fell forward and the stone caught and killed him. If he had not lost his balance and fallen forward he would have been quite clear of the stone and therefore safe.
