Colliery:  Hamsteels
Cause:  Underground Haulage Accident
Lives Lost:  1

Description

No. 552 on the list occurred at Hamsteels Colliery, belonging to the Trustees of the late Joseph Johnson, on December 12th, causing the death of a putter.

A driver was taking a set of tubs into the pit at a trot, when another putter got into the second tub, and deceased attempted to get into the third tub, but missed the top of it with his hand and fell, and was crushed between the side of the bottom canch and the tub side. His spine was injured and he had no use of his lower limbs, and eventually died on the 16th.

There was nothing wrong with the place and the tub, and if deceased had not been attempting to get into the set the accident would not have happened.

I impressed upon the management the necessity of strictly enforcing the Special Rule against riding on tubs, and they have since taken proceedings against three persons for breaking this rule, and got a conviction in each case, and I am hopeful that this dangerous practice will therefore be discontinued.

Fatalities

Howard, John Henry Butterfield, aged 19, Putter, crushed between tubs and side away when attempting, contrary to the rules, to get into a driver's set when it was in motion; died on the 16th inst.
