No. 52 on the list occurred at Carlin How Mines, belonging to Messrs. Bell Brothers, Limited, on January 29th, causing the death of a miner.
Deceased was putting in compressed powder into a shot-hole with a composition stemmer and the charge exploded, and he was so severely burned that he afterwards died.
This case was a distinct breach of Special Rule No. 60 of the Cleveland Ironstone Mines Rules, which requires that the powder shall be pushed into the hole with a wooden stemmer. It is to be regretted that this man broke this rule, established for his own safety, and that by doing so he lost his life.
