No. 337 on the list occurred at North Skelton Mines, belonging to Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan & Co., Limited, on September 9th, causing the death of a boy who was assisting the machine pipe fitters.
This accident occurred on a self acting incline, which was properly provided with refuge holes, below meetings. Deceased was going down the incline, and got into a refuge to let the empty set pass him, but instead of remaining in until the full set had gone down, he came out and went into the middle of the way, and the full set caught and killed him instantly.
Great care should be exercised in travelling self-acting inclines when sets are running, to get into a refuge as soon as the sets start and stay there until they have both passed is the wisest and safest plan to adopt.
