Description

No. 435 on the list occurred at Murton Colliery, belonging to the South Hetton Coal Co., Limited, on September 21st, causing the death of a landing lad.

This boy's duty was to take the tail-rope off the empty sets when they went into the landing, and then attach it to the full set, and to signal to the hauling engineman to take the set away; the runrider at the same time changing the main rope from the empty to the full set. The boy had received instructions to always get into a refuge hole provided for the purpose when sets were coming into the landing, and not to interfere with the tail rope until the set came to a standstill. In this instance, however, be appears to have been taking the rope off the set when it was in motion, and the chain attached to the rope got under one of the wheels of the first tub and caused it to get off the way and knock him down, causing such severe injuries that he died two days afterwards.

By neglecting to carry out the instructions he had received this boy lost his life. There was nothing the matter with the way or tubs, and there was plenty of space in the landing.
