Number 15 on the list occurred at Murton Colliery, on the 26th of April, about 11 o'clock a.m., causing the death of Edward Hart, a trapper boy. It appears, in this case, deceased had left his door, while the drivers were getting a meal, and took advantage of their absence to get one of the ponies and drive it from the flat to the landing. The place was 4 feet 3 inches high, between the rail and the underside of the baulks, and it was necessary for the driver to keep their heads below the level of the top of the tub. Deceased neglected to do this and his head was caught between the tub and a baulk, causing fatal injuries. He was never authorised to leave his door and had no right to take a pony away, without permission ; by doing so, he was acting in opposition to the special rules, and so lost his life. Such accidents as these should never happen ; the majority of the occur though sheer carelessness and wilful breaches of rules laid down for the safety and guidance of the workmen and boys.
