Number 38 of the list occurred at Croxdale Colliery on the 19th August, about 4.30 o'clock a.m., causing the deaths of Charles Robinson and James Hunter, both coal hewers. This accident was caused by a fall of stone which dell away from three slips, one at each side of sit, and the other at the end next to the face of the coal. It was only discovered, after the accident had occurred, that the two deceased men had taken out the timber which had been set to support this stone, although they had been told by one of the officials that it must not be removed, and by doing so lost their lives. I have on many occasions, in my reports and when visiting collieries and mines, and attending inquests, drawn attention to the danger incurred by removing timber, and so have my assistants, but, notwithstanding, accidents caused by this reprehensible and dangerous practice still occur.
