Number 19 on the list occurred at Croxdale Colliery, belonging to the Weardale Iron Company, Limited, on the 1st of May, about 4 o'clock p.m., causing the death of William Curry, a coal hewer. Deceased was assisting a deputy to draw, and while doing so a large stone fell from a breaker, which the deputy had not seen, and killed him on the spot. This stone, directly the deputy knocked out the timber supporting it, would fall without the slightest warning, and there would be no chance of escape. I understand the deputy was a careful and experienced man. Timber drawing is a hazardous occupation, and too much care cannot be exercised while following it.
