Description

No. 59 on the list occurred at Haswell Colliery, belonging to the Haswell, Shotton and Easington Coal and Coke Company, Limited, on the 26th of November, about 1.20 a.m., causing the death of William Allport, a coal hewer. On coming out-bye from work he got on to the full set of tubs, which is a violation of Special Rule No. 106; he evidently forgot about the kip, and on coming to it he was crushed between the roof and the tub, the space through which he passed only being six inches, and he was so badly crushed that he was quite dead when found afterwards on the top of the tub.

There are printed notices on the engine plane prohibiting anyone riding on the sets, but notwithstanding this, deceased disregarded both them and the Special Rules and this fatality was the result.

It is difficult to say what his object can have been in getting on to the set, because it was standing close to the shaft, and he would have only had to walk 30 or 40 yards more.

Accidents of this kind are continually occurring, and warnings seem to have little or no effect, the rules established for the protection of the lives of workmen are often deliberately contravened with fatal results.

Fatalities
