No. 11 on the list occurred at Ormesby Mines, belonging to the Carlton Iron Company, Limited, on the 18th June, about 7 o'clock a.m., causing the death of Robert Wilson, a miner.
The seam at this mine is composed of two blocks with dogger stone between them. One, the top, is 2 ft. 6 ins., and the other, the bottom, is 6 ft. in thickness. It was a portion of the top which fell on to deceased. He had fired a shot and no doubt loosened the top stone, which fell without warning. I fear, however, he had not used sufficient precaution in examining the place after the shot was fired. If he had done so, and got some timber set, I do not think that this accident would have happened. The deputy was in about an hour and a half before and stated it was then in thorough working order.
