No. 10 on the list occurred as Eston Mines, belonging to Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan, and Company, Limited, on the 6th of June, about 8.30 a.m., causing the death of William Bartram, a miner. On the day of the accident, deceased was working alone in a place, as all the other men were paired, and he was the odd man in the district, a piece of ironstone burst off the face, at a "dry," caught and killed him instantly. All the evidence went to prove that deceased was a most careful man and experienced miner, and also that there was a large quantity of timber close to the place, which he could have used had he thought it necessary to do so. It was, I think, a pure accident, and one that might have happened to anyone ; my object, however, in mentioning it particularly is to draw attention to the deceptive character of these "backs" or "dries," and to urge continual care in detecting and dealing with them.
