| Lives Lost: | 1 |
No. 23 on the list occurred at Lands Colliery, belonging to Messrs. Henry Stobart and Co., on the 5th of June, about 1.30 p.m., causing the death of Robert Richardson, a coal hewer. Deceased, along with another man, was employed in a broken jud in the Brockwell Seam. A putter brought them an empty tub, and proceeded to take the full one out. He had only got a short distance when he heard some stones falling, and he called to the two hewers to come out at once. One of them managed to get out safely, but deceased had only gone three of four yards when the roof fell, and he was killed on the spot. The deputy, who had been in the place a few minutes before and set some timber, considered it was perfectly safe, as did the two hewers, deceased and the one that escaped.
