No. 19 on the list occurred at New Copley Colliery, belonging to the Woodland Coal Company, Limited, on the 12 of May, about 4 o'clock p.m., causing the death of Edward Oates, a pumping engine-man.
This accident was caused by deceased oiling the engine whilst it was in motion. From the position in which the oil-can and his lamp were found, I think he had been caught by the crank and thrown upon the fence protecting the fly-wheel, and was caught by it. He was not found for some time afterwards. The engineer at the colliery said he had given deceased instructions not to oil the engine without stopping it. If he had done this the probability is that he would have been alive at this moment.
