No. 16 on the list occurred at Murton Colliery, belonging to the South Hetton Coal Company, Limited, on the 21st of April, about 9.30 a.m., causing the death of Thomas Bowey, a coal hewer. Deceased had been told by the deputy to turn a place away near the end of the pillar, who had, ten minutes before the accident happened, visited deceased and timbered the place. Bowey, after this, went over to the loose end, out of his place altogether, and commenced to work there ; while he was doing this a piece of coal, measuring about 7 ft. 6 ins. long by 3 ft. wide by 2 ft. 6 ins. in thickness, and weighing about 1½ tons, fell away and killed him instantly. There was plenty of timber both set and loose for his protection in his own place. His intention, no doubt, was to get as much of the easily worked coal as possible, amongst the breakers at the loose end, but in doing so he was contravening a Special Rule.
