No. 21 an the list also occurred at Shildon Lodge Colliery, belonging to Bolckow, Vaughan, & Co., Limited, on the 9th May about 2.30 o'clock p.m., causing the death of Joseph Anderson.
The accident occurred in a stone drift, and was no doubt caused by forcing a cartridge of powder into a hole of insufficient size, as the shot exploded whilst he was stemming the hole and brought the stone on to deceased. Everything has been done that can be to impress upon men, using powder, how dangerous it is to use any force, as the friction set up at once ignites the charge, but still these accidents happen. In doing this they are acting contrary to one of the General Rules.
