| Date: | 5th May 1883 |
| Colliery: | Hill Top |
| Cause: | (See description below) |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
(a strike hand at Ushaw Moor Colliery), was found dead at the bottom of Hill Top Colliery ; it has never been clearly proved how he came there ; the miners' agents endeavoured to establish it as a case of murder, in consequence of this long dispute ; but I am inclined to the belief that he had attempted to slide down one of the ropes for the purpose of procuring some picks ; the rope, however, did not reach the bottom, and he must have fallen about 20 yards ; had he fallen the full depth of the pit there would have been more injuries on his body than were described by the doctor ; his foot marks were clearly traced to the pit bank ; there was no appearance of a struggle, and no quarrel was known to have taken place that night [fatality reported during the year but not classified as a colliery accident]
