| Date: | 24th October 1883 |
| Colliery: | Dipton |
| Cause: | Suffocation by fumes from gun powder |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
No. 53 in the list occurred in a stone drift. A shot had been fired which had disarranged the ventilation by blowing down a temporary door. This had not been observed by the workmen, and, without careful examination as to ventilation, a second shot was made ready and fired. On the men returning, the fumes from the exploded shot, the ventilation as above stated not having been restored, overcame one of them, and before he could be removed he expired. Compressed powder was being used.
