No. 27 on the list occurred at Lofthouse Mines, while Thomas Potter, a miner, was throwing a charge of loose powder into the shot-hole. The hole had been charged and fired before without doing any execution, and Potter had drilled the stemming out, and put four or five pellets of compressed powder in the back of the hole, and was in the act of throwing the third or fourth lot of loose powder in when it exploded. He had neither pricker or stemmer in the hole. Evidence was given that no gas had been seen in the district since the 7th September, and that the place was examined for gas just before Potter began to charge the hole the second time.
