No. 6 on the list occurred at Lingdale mines, and was due to the premature explosion of a shot, caused by gas. When Scaddon, the miner, was drilling the shot hole it passed through a "back" from which a little gas issued. He finished drilling the hole and charged it in the usual way. When he applied the candle to the match the gas took fire ; as he was retreating he looked back and saw the match was out and that there was no burning gas to be seen either. He was going back to relight the match when the shot exploded, the explosion having, no doubt, been caused by the gas burning into the "back" and so coming into contact with the powder. Scaddon should have reported the gas to the deputy, and asked for fuze to fire the shot with.
