Description

No. 1 on the Cleveland Ironstone Mines List was a fatal accident to T. Hart, a miner at Longacres Mines, in Cleveland, caused by an explosion of powder. He had drilled a hole in the ironstone about three feet nine inches long, which was charged and fired in the usual way, but only a small portion of stone was blown from the neck of the hole. Another charge of powder was then put in, and while it was being stemmed, and when nearly finished, it exploded and killed hart. The pricker and beater which he was using were of yellow. When the shot then prematurely exploded, it again only blew a small portion of stone from the neck of the hole. The manager had the hole cut out to see if anything could be found to account for the accident. The only peculiarity observed was that there was a small fossil (Belemnite) on one side about 17 inches from the inner end, which caused some irregularity in the shape of the hole, but this point would be covered by the stemming when the shot exploded.
