Accident No. 14 resulted in the death of James Willis, a deputy at Springwell Colliery. He was taking out a prop in the Low Main Seam, and another deputy was holding a light for him, when a "cauldron bottom," which has a slippery parting in the strata, and generally comes away without warning, fell on to him from the roof and caused his death.
