Description

Accident No. 5 occurred at the Derwent pit of the Consett Collieries; it was a fall of coal and stone, and caused the death of William Bainbridge, a hewer, aged 47 years. After the accident it was observed that a prop, which had been placed to support the roof, had been displaced; but whether by the fall, or by the deceased having knocked it out for his own convenience in working, could not be ascertained.
