| Cause: | Boiler explosion |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
Accident No. 2 was caused by the explosion of a boiler at Seghill Colliery on the 19th of January, and resulted in the death of John Thompson, an engineman. The boiler was a very old one — between 30 and 40 years, it was of the ordinary egg-ended construction, 30 feet long and 6 feet in diameter. The deceased was himself in charge of the boilers at the time of the explosion, and was responsible for their proper condition. At the inquest, Mr. Wm. Waller, late Inspector for the Midland Boiler Insurance Association, said that he had examined the wreck of the boiler very minutely, and had come to the conclusion that the reason of the boiler giving way was the deterioration of some of the plates, many of which were very thin. This, however, could not be detected by an ordinary examination. No blame was found to attach to anyone in charge, and it was said that the deceased himself did not blame anyone.
