At Shotton Colliery, belonging to the Haswell Coal Company, on the 19th of July, a boy about 13 years of age fell down a staple 12 fathoms in depth and was killed. This boy, contrary to orders, was attempting to descend the staple by a ladder, instead of waiting to be sent down in a cage. He had been forbidden to go by the ladder, and had even been chastised by one of the underground agents for having done so only on the day before this accident.
