Cause:  Crushed by descending cage
Lives Lost:  1

Description

At Dryburn Grange Colliery, belonging to the late Marchioness of Londonderry, on the 10th of June, George Cole, an onsetter, employed at the bottom of the shaft, was killed by a cage descending upon and crushing him.

It was supposed that he had ventured into the place upon which one of the cages rested when at the bottom of the shaft, in order to repair or replace a bunting which supported the cage, and that the cage had descended upon him before he left the place.

He had been previously checked for going into the shaft bottom without first signalling to have the cages stopped from running in the shaft, as ought always to be done in such cases.
