| Date: | 5th April 1859 |
| Colliery: | St. Hilda |
| Cause: | Explosion |
| Lives Lost: | 2 |
Explosion in Hilda Pit occurred in a pair of drifts pushing into the whole coal, and although they made a good deal of gas, and were imperfectly bratticed, yet they were allowed to work with naked lights ; the consequence was an explosion, and the loss of two lives.
Considerable reflection was cast upon the viewer and overman, and a rule was laid down that in all such circumstances the safety lamp must be used.
