| Colliery: | Blaydon Main |
| Cause: | Fell out of cage |
| Lives Lost: | 1 |
A man was killed at Blaydon Main Colliery, by falling out of the cage at the top of the shaft.
He had given the proper signal to the banksman that he was coming up, but the pit being very shallow it wanted the proper signal rope and bell, and so great a discharge of steam was flying off in the brakehouse that the engineman could not distinguish the position of the cage and pit top ; so that it was drawn up against the pulley, in which case it canted on side so much that the poor man slid out, and fell down the shaft.
