January 19th. — A tremendous boiler explosion took place at Barrington Colliery ; boiler six feet diameter, and forty feet in length, killing one person. Like most of these cases, no distinct evidence could be had as to the immediate cause ; but nobody doubted that a deficiency of water had existed, although the evidence bore the contrary. Five boilers were connected together with both the steam and water pipes ; each boiler had two safety valves and one float apparatus pressure, 85 lbs. per inch.
The boiler had been used for many years, and certain parts were reduced to three-sixteenths of an inch thickness, but in the judgment of some of the witnesses the boiler should have had internal stays, both longitudinally and transversely. Ordered to be so arranged in future.
