He went to deliver some letters and a message to the inspector, Thomas Dunn, who he found on an engine near the weigh house. The train was in motion when he handed the letters to Dunn and a moment later he was found lying with his right leg across the rails, ‘which was much lacerated and fractured in several places.’ Ridley died about five hours later from loss of blood ‘having endured much agony.’ He said he had tried to get on the engine but had slipped and fell among the wheels as he tried to deliver the message.
