Date:  23rd November 1858
Colliery:  Broughton Moor
Cause:  Fell down shaft
Lives Lost:  1

Description

November 23rd. Broughton Moor. Fell down shaft.

In consequence of the breaking of the crank-pin of engine, whilst there was only one rope in use, the cage with five persons in it could not be controlled in its descent, although the engineman did all in his power by applying the brake.

It was so far fortunate that although all were more or less hurt, only one was fatally wounded. Great reflection was cast upon the careless manner of attending to the printed rules, which provided for a limited number of persons to ascend or descend at a time under circumstances such as this; but a change of management had taken place a few months before, and sufficient care had not been taken to charge the waiters-on to carry out the rules.
