Date:  9th June 1858
Colliery:  Murton
Cause:  (See description below)
Lives Lost:  1

Description

Accident No. 40 in the list caused the death of an onsetter, who incautiously ventured to go into the resting place of a cage at the bottom of a shaft after it had been drawn away, without previously giving a signal that it was not to be lowered down again ; it was accidentally lowered down upon him and caused his death.

The accidents Nos. 40 and 68 are of a class which can only arise from the careless temerity of the sufferers themselves, and are almost as difficult to prevent as the crime of suicide.
