He had been sitting on the end of some tubs waiting for another set, when a stone weighing about 1½ tons fell from the roof and crushed him to death. At the inquest, which was held in the Granby Arms on 27 October, it was stated that Mr. Coxon, the viewer, and the overman, Thomas Willis, had only just left the place before the fall occurred after spending half an hour with a restive horse. The timber had been ‘perfectly sound and had not been disturbed by the horse.’
