On Oct. 1 a life was lost at Ludworth Colliery by the engine being reversed, and the cage suddenly drawn up against the pulley, whereby a poor man was precipitated down the shaft ;— this was done by an inexperienced young man being allowed to handle the engine for a moment, and this was proved to be inconsistent with the written rules of the colliery; the jury brought in a verdict of manslaughter against both the engineman and his assistant, who are to take their trials at the ensuing Durham assizes. Note. — Both the parties at Ludworth on October 1st and that at Harraton on December 12th were tried and acquitted, it being proved that in the latter case the overman did not acquaint the strange onsetter with the nature of the signals.
