He left work on Saturday, 27 August, to go to his home at Ferryhill. On arriving at the Byers Green Branch of the Clarence Railway an engine with six laden coal waggons and some trucks was passing down. Baines got on the buffer of the first truck, then on the coupling chain, intending to climb on the waggons. Unfortunately, the trucks ran in and crushed him between the top of the coal waggon and a truck. When the engineman eased the engine, Baines dropped down under the waggon and three trucks ran over his left leg and hand. He was taken to a house in Spennymoor where he died about an hour and a half later. The train had only been travelling at 4m.p.h. at the time of the accident. An inquest was held at the Vulcan Inn, Spennymoor on 29 August the Coroner was W. Trotter. It was stated that it was against orders to ride on the waggons, and a verdict of accidental death was recorded
